The arrogant ignorance of Alan Ball
Alan Ball is the creator of the HBO cable series Six Feet Under, an Emmy-award-winning show about a family who owns a funeral parlor.
One prominent theme of Six Feet Under—throughout its first season—involves the painful, poignant and sometimes piquant transition of one of its main characters as he slowly comes out of the closet in order to proudly own his gay self-identity. The show treats this particular theme with the utmost respect, sympathy, understanding and a bit of humor now and then as well.
Alan Ball currently has directed a movie called Towelhead—a movie which highlights the “pain” of “discrimination” and “bias” and “bigotry” which Muslims must “suffer” from insensitive Americans.
The movie’s screenwriter (who adapted her screenplay from her own novel), an Arab-American named Alicia Erian, alludes to a major theme of the movie in the term of “racism”.
Alan Ball approvingly, unctuously describes Alicia Erian’s agenda thusly:
. . . she so effectively dramatizes the pain inflicted by such language, something many people of non-minority descent never have to face.
Does Alan Ball know that this particular “minority” he is bending over backwards to respect in fact hates homosexuality, hates gays, hates the gay culture? Does he know that the religious culture of Muslims not only theologically inculcates punishment for homosexuality, but concretely institutes those punishments today in the 21st century, to the degree that they follow Islamic Sharia Law--such that in seven Muslim majority countries, homosexuality is punishable by death? That since the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979 to the present, at least 4,000 gays and lesbians have been put to death for the “crime” of homosexuality? That in 26 Muslim countries (according to an Amnesty International report) homosexuality is punishable by various corporal punishments short of death, such as public flogging? That the traditional punishment of homosexuality according to Islamic Sharia Law is death by various means, most traditionally death either by being flung from a tall cliff or building, or by having a wall topple over on top of them? That in supposedly “moderate” Islamic countries like Jordan or Indonesia where homosexuality is not illegal, Muslims have taken the Islamic law into their own hands to terrorize gays?
Does Alan Ball know that Mohammed is considered by all Muslims to be the Perfect Man (an-insan al-kamil) and the Best Model of Conduct for all times (uswa hasana)? And does Alan Ball know that all Muslims aim to organize their personal, familial, social, legal and political existence according to the Sayings of Mohammed, the Hadith? And that such organization of existence is the goal of Islamic Sharia Law? And does Alan Ball know that among the top three most authoritative Hadith for Muslims are those collected by Abu Dawud? I bet that Alan Ball does not know that according to Abu Dawud’s Hadith ( as well as other Hadith collectors—Imam Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah), Mohammed is recorded as saying, with reference to the Old Testament story of Lot of Sodom and Gomorrah fame:
Whoever is found doing the act of the people of Lot, then kill them; the doer and the one it is done to.
And I bet Alan Ball does not know that the “act of the people of Lot” referred to here is specifically, according to the Koran (7:82): “. . . you practise your lusts on men instead of women”.
No, Alan Ball would only take the trouble to learn about such hateful religious fundamentalism when it is found among the expressions of white Western Christians. But when such hateful religious fundamentalism is the mainstream belief of precious Muslims, he suddenly is, apparently, ignorant. His cable show, Six Feet Under, while sensitively and respectfully exploring the gay theme, takes not a few snide swipes at stuffy, repressed Catholics. Has he bothered to learn about the plight of gays and lesbians in Islam by at least reading some of the reports of the gay activist Bruce Bawer, once a liberal idiot like Alan Bell who, unlike him, has woken up to the anti-liberal menace of Islam?
And I bet Alan Ball does not know that the “moderate” Shia Islamic cleric, Ayatollah Sistani (whom the columnist Tom Friedman—another arrogantly ignorant idiot—recommended for the Nobel Peace Prize!), said that gays “should be killed in the worst manner possible”.
And I bet Alan Ball does not know that Sheikh Qaradawi, one of the most authoritative Islamic clerics in Sunni Islam, who teaches at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, one of the most prestigious religious educational institutions in the Muslim world, in his learned ruling on this issue, has described homosexuality thusly:
. . . this depraved practice in a society disrupts its natural life pattern and makes those who practice it slaves to their lusts, depriving them of decent taste, decent morals, and a decent manner of living. The story of the people of Prophet Lut (Lot) (peace be upon him), as narrated in the Qur'an should be sufficient for us. Prophet Lut's people were addicted to this shameless depravity, abandoning natural, pure, lawful relations with women in the pursuit of this unnatural, foul and illicit practice.
And I bet Alan Ball does not know that this same Sheikh Qaradawi, in considering the appropriate punishment for homosexuality among “Muslim jurists”, can only find the following disagreement among them:
Should it be the same as the punishment for fornication, or should both the active and passive participants be put to death?
Either way, Qaradawi concludes with the affirmation that:
While such punishments may seem cruel, they have been suggested to maintain the purity of the Islamic society and to keep it clean of perverted elements.
Conclusion:
No, Alan Ball does not know all this. All he knows is that Muslims are precious, ethnic, brown people who are “oppressed” by the evil West, and continue to suffer the “pain” of “discrimination” which only “minorities”, and not “non-minorities” (read: white Westerners like the self-hating white Westerner Alan Ball himself) must suffer.
I.e., for Alan Ball, the fact that most Muslims are brown people, with the additional spice and panache of having a Third World culture for their anthropological identity, trumps the fact that their precious ethnic culture firmly and solidly and currently nourishes a hatred of homosexuality so profound, that gays and lesbians throughout the Muslim world are victims of various forms of corporal punishment, including death.
Alas, the Alan Balls of our Western world are all too common—while the balls we do need are all too rare. Indeed, execrable idiots such as Alan Ball are dominant and mainstream. And that is why we find ourselves in the strange and outrageous circumstance of being incapable, as a civilization, of rationally analyzing Islam as a menace to our liberal values, our liberal human rights, and our liberal societies—and then of rationally taking action on the basis of that analysis.
