A 19th-century French classical composer, Vincent D'Indy, and his piece Choral Varie written in 1903, for symphony orchestra and, interestingly enough, saxophone. The saxophone (played by Sigurður Flosason for the Iceland Symphony Orchestra) doesn't sound jazzy at all, but almost like a clarinet, yet with a distinctly stronger and metallic sonority.
